What "privacy-first" actually means here

Privacy-first emotion analytics means measuring how an audience reacts without creating a record that identifies anybody. In practice the distinction that matters is architectural rather than contractual: a system either processes video where it is captured and discards the frame, or it transmits images to a server and relies on policy to govern what happens next. Only the first kind is outside the scope of GDPR's biometric provisions, because there is no biometric data to protect. The test to apply to any vendor on this page is simple and worth asking directly: does a face image ever leave the device, is any identifier retained that could be linked back to a person, and can the system recognise the same individual twice? A platform that answers no, no and no is doing anonymous analytics. A platform that answers yes to any of them is doing something that needs explicit consent.

The options

Zenus AI

The most widely adopted facial analytics provider in the events industry, and the name most people in the sector will recognise. Zenus describes its approach as "ethical facial analysis", capturing impressions, demographics, positive sentiment and dwell time, and states that it delivers insights without collecting personal data. It is US-headquartered and works with named enterprise customers including Dell and ServiceNow.

Choose Zenus if: you want the most established option in the events category, you are operating primarily in the US, or internal stakeholders will be reassured by a vendor their association already knows.

MoodMe

An on-device SDK rather than a managed service. MoodMe states that its algorithms "run 100% locally on the user's device" and that faces are "never stored and never sent to any cloud", classifying seven universal emotions along with engagement, valence and attention metrics. Live experiences and corporate events are stated use cases.

Choose MoodMe if: you have engineering resource and want to embed emotion detection inside your own application, kiosk or installation. It is the better answer when the requirement is a component, not a report.

MorphCast

A browser-based engine that runs entirely client-side — a JavaScript library with no server round-trip, built on Ekman's six core emotions plus a dimensional model for intensity and valence. Its primary stated sectors are education and healthcare rather than live events.

Choose MorphCast if: your measurement problem is on a web page rather than on a stand — virtual events, remote content testing, or an online registration journey. For a physical exhibition hall it is the wrong shape of tool.

iMotions (with Affectiva)

The research-grade option. iMotions is a multimodal human behaviour platform combining facial expression analysis with eye tracking, EEG, EDA/GSR and more, and it now owns Affectiva's emotion AI. It is used by academic and consumer insight teams, and is reportedly in use at nine of the ten highest-ranked universities.

Choose iMotions if: you need defensible, publishable, multi-sensor evidence for a controlled study. It is substantially more capable than anything else here, and correspondingly more involved to run — it is not built for three days of unattended measurement on a stand.

EchoDepth Events

Our own platform, built for exhibition stands, conference sessions and product launches rather than adapted from a research or retail tool. Video is processed on an edge unit at the venue and each frame is discarded immediately. It runs in two tiers: Standard measures footfall, dwell time, movement and crowd density anonymously with no consent requirement, and Deep adds full FACS Action Unit analysis with delegate opt-in at registration. If you want the largest installed base, that is Zenus. If you want a research instrument, that is iMotions.

Questions worth asking any vendor

  • Does a face image ever leave the capture device, and what exactly is transmitted?
  • Can the system recognise the same person on two different days? If yes, it is identification, not analysis.
  • What is retained after the event, for how long, and who can request deletion?
  • Under the EU AI Act, does the deployment need transparency notification under Article 50(3)?
  • Does the output arrive during the event or after it — and can anything be changed while it still matters?
